“Emanations”
The space activates the mystery and mystical nature of being alive that is often overlooked or lost in our contemporary society. As the viewer enters the installation the shift from light to dark activates the senses immediately; submerged into darkness and ultraviolet light gives the sensation that you have stepped into a different world. This activates the viewers consciousness they become instantly aware of themselves. Rather simple materials transport the viewer to an extraordinary space. This happens through Computer Numeric Control shaped pieces of plywood, fluorescent paint, ultraviolet light, and audio. The viewer is brought to a liminal space where the viewer can explore the space that exists between thought and manifestation, reality and hallucination, the conscious and the subconscious.
The work embodies the feeling of a ritualistic space. Deities hung on the wall such as the Egyptian Sphinx, the Hindu god Vishnu, and Jesus work in a similar fashion to the images in a church with stained glass windows; in the way sun illuminates the glass to evoke the feeling that you are in the light of god. The ultraviolet light stimulates the molecules in the paint causing it to emit light, which speaks to the internal light within all sentient beings. The fluorescent tape functions as an aesthetic element to further engage the space and alludes to the connection of all things. A diversity of deities offer many access points into different altered states and dimensions. These visuals create an experience of being in a spiritually charged space.
The audio activating the entire space enforces, feelings of spirituality, wonder, and mystic. A slow rise in ambient bass that is not fully recognizable until the addition of the singing voices, eventually abrupts shakes and rattles through the space. The shift to a darker tone is significant in creating a hallucinatory experience, where the audience is not in control of the experience but engulfed by it. Enveloped by a myriad of sounds they all fade into the background and only the sound of deep distorted breathing is left until the audio loops again.
Light and sound work together to create a vibratory sensation that radiates both optically and sonically. I provide an environment that is emanating, alive, and active, an experience engaging sensations of altered states most typically achieved through dreams, trance, or psychotropics substances.
